BANGALORE: The textile and apparel industry is the country''s largest exporter and foreign exchange earner besides providing employment to over 50 million people.
Bangalore University''s new course, M.Sc in Apparel Technology and Management, promises to offer in-depth theoretical and practical training in the fields of apparel production, apparel business management, marketing and merchandising, apparel quality management, fashion and apparel design.
``Bangalore has about 1,800 apparel industries, of which more than 850 are exporting units. Besides, the centre __ in association with the state government __ is establishing an apparel technology park here. In view of all this, we thought textile education needed to be restructured to meet the needs of the industry by offering a PG course in apparel technology and management,'''' according to course coordinator K. N. Ningegowda.
So far, courses related to textiles were confined to engineering colleges focusing on technology of yarn, fabric production and processing. The new PG course has been designed by interacting with apparel industries, apparel and management organisations and inputs from foreign universities.
Students with a bachelors degree in fashion and apparel design, B.Sc, BA Clothing and Textiles (Home Science), BE/B.Tech (Textile and Silk Technology) and other textile and apparel-related UG courses can seek admission, according to the Bangalore University.
``The response for all new courses, including this course, has been quite enthusiastic,'''' Vice-Chancellor M.S. Thimmappa said.
